The Keeping of the Wine

Anyone know why red wines should be stored for months or years before they're drunk?

Obviously because they'll taste better when you wait, but why reds and not whites?

I think but I may be completely wrong Kerry that it has something to do with the tanine in red wine I think is not in white ... I may be completely wrong though lol
